House Mice in Jackson as It Cools Down

House mice are the small rodents that push into Jackson homes as the first cool fronts arrive in fall. They come indoors for warmth and food, and this guide covers where they hide and how to keep them out before a couple of mice become many.

Why fall brings mice indoors

Through the warm months, house mice can live comfortably outdoors. As nights cool in fall and winter, they look for shelter, and a Jackson home offers warmth, water and food in one place. That is when sightings and droppings in the kitchen tend to start.

A mouse needs only a gap about a quarter inch wide, so the openings they use are easy to overlook on any home, new or old.

Where house mice hide

Mice stay close to food and warmth. Look for them behind and under the stove and refrigerator, in the backs of lower cabinets, in pantry corners, and in the garage and utility room. In older homes they travel wall voids and the spaces around plumbing.

Signs include small dark droppings the size of a grain of rice, gnaw marks on packaging, shredded paper used for nesting, and a faint musky smell in a closed cabinet.

Keep them out of the kitchen

Close the gaps first. Fit a door sweep on exterior doors, seal around pipes and cable lines where they enter the wall, and screen vents. Then remove the reasons to stay: keep dry goods in sealed containers, clean up crumbs and pet food, and clear clutter that offers nesting.

If mice are already inside, trapping along the walls and behind appliances, where they actually run, removes them faster than bait left in the open.

When one mouse means more

Because mice breed quickly, seeing one in the daytime or finding fresh droppings in more than one spot usually means several are present. If the activity keeps returning, an experienced local exterminator can find the entry points and clear the home.
