Keep Roof Rats Out of Jackson Attics

Roof rats are the climbing rats that get into Jackson attics by way of trees, fences and power lines. If you hear scratching overhead at night in a neighborhood like Belhaven, Fondren or Northeast Jackson, this guide covers how to make your home a harder target.

Why roof rats love Jackson attics

Jackson has a heavy tree canopy and a warm, humid climate, which is close to ideal for roof rats. They are agile climbers that travel limbs, utility wires and wood fences, then move onto the roof and look for a way in. A hot attic gives them shelter, and insulation gives them nesting.

Because they enter high, roof rats often go unnoticed until you hear them running above the ceiling after dark. By then a small group may already be nesting in the insulation.

Cut the bridges to your roof

The single most useful step is trimming tree limbs back from the roofline, ideally several feet, so rats lose their bridge onto the house. Keep fences and trellises from touching the roof as well, and thin dense vegetation that touches the walls.

Rats also travel utility lines. You cannot move the lines, but you can remove the easy jumping off points near them by keeping nearby branches cut back.

Seal the ways in

Walk the roofline and look for gaps at the soffits, gable vents, ridge and where a lower roof meets a wall. Roof rats use openings that look too small to matter. Damaged vent screen, lifted flashing and gaps around roof penetrations all need to be closed with materials rodents cannot chew through easily.

Sealing works best after the rats already inside are trapped and removed, so you do not close animals in.

When to call for help

If you are hearing regular activity overhead, finding droppings in the attic, or seeing rub marks along beams, it is worth having an experienced local exterminator inspect. They can trace the entry points across the roofline and set trapping where the rats actually run.
